Tips For Planning the Perfect Outdoor Wedding
Having an outdoor wedding is the dream of many brides-to-be. Visions of gathering in a warm, sunny meadow or standing barefoot on the beach as you say your “I dos” is something that many wish for, but unfortunately, the actual experience rarely lives up to expectations. Perfect days when the sun isn’t too hot, it’s not too windy, and you don’t get an unexpected burst of rain rarely occur, and that’s why it’s important to thoroughly think through your choice of having an outdoor wedding.
At the Barn at Swallows Eve, we want you to know that a perfect outdoor wedding is possible, with the right planning. Keep reading for tips on planning your outdoor wedding, and if you’re looking for a wedding venue that can accommodate both indoor and outdoor weddings, contact us to reserve your date!
Consider the Weather and Dress Appropriately
You may have chosen a light, sleeveless dress for your wedding, but if you’re planning to be outdoors during the winter in a cold climate, you may want to consider shopping for a faux fur shawl to keep your teeth from chattering. Likewise, if you’re having a summer ceremony and it’s likely to be hot, consider lighter, airy dresses for you and your bridesmaids.
You may also want to think about the shoes you’ll be wearing. Will you be standing in the grass? Spiked heels probably aren’t going to be the best choice.
Keep Your Guests Informed
If you’re planning to have an outdoor wedding, it’s considerate to communicate your plans to your guests. Just as you will want to plan your wardrobe, makeup, and hairstyle to accommodate any unexpected rain showers or gusty winds, your guests will also want to be prepared.
Help Your Guests Stay Comfortable
Even if you communicate your intentions to hold an outdoor wedding, not everyone may be as well-prepared as you. Since they’ll be spending quite a bit of time outside, help keep your guests comfortable by providing parasols or umbrellas to keep them shaded, hand-held fans to keep cool, or blankets to stay warm if it gets chilly.
Plan to Use a Microphone
Being prepared for particularly warm/cold or inclement weather means more than just choosing the proper attire. Consider how your makeup and hair will hold up in extreme conditions. You may want to plan for an updo if you have long hair to keep it under control on a windy day. Waterproof mascara is another good idea — regardless of whether or not you’re having an outdoor wedding. The last thing you want is for your wedding pictures to be filled with black streaks of mascara from tears of joy, raindrops, or sweat.
Have a Backup Plan
Sometimes no matter how much you prepare, the weather just doesn’t want to cooperate. If you’re faced with a torrential downpour that won’t be letting up any time soon, it’s important to have a backup plan. At a minimum, you should at least have a tent where you and your guests can find shelter in the storm. Another option would be to make a last-minute switch to an indoor space — but that’s only possible if your venue has one for you to use.
