Get To Know Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is a one-of-a-kind destination for food lovers, shoppers, wine enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. Founded in 1846 by German immigrants, it still features many historical sites and museums dedicated to preserving the town’s almost 175-year past. Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a small town that’s big on charm where visitors can enjoy quaint boutiques, restaurants featuring authentic German cuisine, and an endless array of wineries.
Fredericksburg Through the Years
The Early Years
(1846 - 1850)
Fredericksburg originated as a German outpost. It was founded by John O. Meusebach in 1846 and was named for Prince Frederick of Prussia who was an esteemed member of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas.
The first few years of the town saw much growth and by 1850, Fredericksburg had 754 residents.
Civil War and the Years After
(1846 - 1850)
Residents of Fredericksburg tried to maintain their independence and did not want to get involved in state or national affairs.
Because of this, many residents refused to learn English.
It wasn’t until the 1900s that purely English-speaking teachers were employed in Fredericksburg’s public schools.
Early and Mid 1900s
(1900 - 1950)
By 1904, the population of Fredericksburg rose to over 1,600 residents, and by 1930 it started to be recognized as a popular tourist destination, known for its hunting and fishing.
Over the years, it has been home to various types of industry including iron works, furniture manufacturing, granite and limestone quarries, a sewing factory, tannery, and more.
Late 1900s & Early 21st Century
(1951 - Present)
Over the years, Fredericksburg has continued to grow as a tourist destination, but for the permanent residents of the town, it still maintains that small-town feel. Although the population has grown to just over 10,000 residents, Fredericksburg receives far more visitors each year who are looking for a charming Southern vacation filled with food, fun, and dozens of historical sites that can easily be reached on foot.
